Cutoff Scores, Placement Messages, and Credit Policies for 2019-2020

Placement into the Chinese courses is initially based on the student's scores on the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension portions of the Chinese Placement Test. Placement might be modified based on the student's scores on the Speaking and Writing portions. If a student's speaking and writing ability indicate that the student should enroll in either a higher-level or lower-level class, the student will be so informed when classes start.

Cutoff scores and placement recommendations are derived in collaboration with the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and are reviewed annually. The policies below apply to all students entering the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Summer 2019, Fall 2019, or Spring 2020.
