Immersive Technology

Overview

  • At the forefront of educational innovation, our Innovation Studio and X3 Studio are transforming how students engage with learning and how instructors design their curriculum.
  • By integrating advanced immersive technologies, including virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and generative AI, into our academic spaces, we provide faculty and students with hands-on opportunities to explore, prototype, and apply emerging tools in meaningful ways.
  • These experiences foster deeper conceptual understanding, support active learning, and encourage creative exploration across disciplines.
  • Whether developing XR experiences tailored to specific educational goals or experimenting with AI-driven content creation, our spaces are designed to support ideation, iteration, and collaboration in a dynamic, future-facing environment.

Why XR?

  • Described by many as an “empathy machine,” Virtual Reality (VR) is rapidly emerging as a transformative force in education.
  • Research continues to demonstrate VR’s unique ability to foster empathy and compassion, making it one of the most impactful tools for experiential learning.
  • Our Innovation Studio actively contributes to this shift by hosting instructors and classes focused on cultivating empathy through immersive experiences.
  • Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the Innovation Studio and X3 Studio enables students to engage with realistic simulations and virtual environments where they can practice skills, explore complex scenarios, and conduct experiments in a safe, controlled setting.
  • These immersive experiences not only enhance engagement but also accommodate diverse learning styles, making education more inclusive and accessible.
  • As the digital landscape evolves, our Innovation Studio and X3 Studio remain committed to preparing students for the future.
  • This approach empowers students and faculty alike to explore, prototype, and apply emerging technologies in meaningful, forward-thinking ways.

Fundamentally we have three different types of offerings when it comes to XR:

Hosting XR Experiences (Innovation Studio)
  • We let users experience a variety of XR applications in our spaces, including but not limited to entertainment, education, and exploration.
  • Primarily held in the Innovation Studio, Armory Building room 172.
XR Consultation (Virtual Reality Lab)
  • We answer questions regarding XR and its various use cases in education, and how best to implement them into different types of curricula.
  • This service is in the X3 Studio.
XR Project Development (X3 Studio)
  • We develop Minimum Viable User Experiences (MVUX) which are vertical slices of varying types of experiences on a case-by-case basis. These projects are co-developed with CITL’s XR Designer and the faculty.
  • This service is in the X3 Studio, but the MVUX’s can be applied to the previous two spaces.
