Storyblocks FAQ
For Illinois Faculty and Staff, there is no need to "create" an account. You only need to start the login process with your netID@illinois.edu email, and when you navigate off that email entry text box, the website will detect you are affiliated with a single-sign-on group, and prompt you to continue through Shibboleth and 2-Factor Authentication.
Storyblocks offers a Blog with helpful articles and video tutorials. The Maker tool on Storyblocks offers an in-browser media editor and creation tool, and you can start with supplied templates. This is the simplest way to work with templates.
Listed in the Storyblocks video library, there are thousands of motion graphic and transition templates. These can be quite technical to implement, but there are resources to help should using a template help your workflows:
- As long as the designated users (UIUC Faculty and Staff) are handling the raw assets, modification and use of those assets in various projects is broadly permitted. Commercial and non-commercial applications, as well as broadcast television and sporting event applications, are allowed.
- The following assets cannot be used in promotional materials and advertisements: (a) any assets marked as “Editorial: Yes,” or (b) any assets featuring identifiable person marked as “Model Release: No.” Please click “MORE DETAILS” under the assets to check this information. For more, please read the following help articles: "What is editorial content?" and "Are there any limitations to the Storyblocks Licenses?"
- The license does not permit UIUC users from downloading assets to hand to a 3rd party for editing or any other usage as raw (standalone) files:
- “Once you incorporate a Stock File into your project, you can share your finished project freely, but you may not share the underlying individual Stock File as a standalone file with anyone who does not also have an appropriate Storyblocks Enterprise (user) license.”
- “You cannot sell, license, or redistribute our Stock Files, nor can you build your own stock media site with our files. You cannot create a trademark or logo based on our Stock Files, since that could block other customers from using the Stock Files.”
- Regarding citations, try to make citations like “Image/Footage provided by Storyblocks” when possible:
- “You will make commercially reasonable efforts to credit Storyblocks as the provider of content: ‘Footage provided by Storyblocks’.”
- Please consult the license for other restrictions and basic limitations.

Yes! TA's should be able to login to Storyblocks and use content under the Enterprise License as part of their work supporting instruction at Illinois.
Our accounts are managed by Shibboleth, and custom configuration to include students as Staff when employed in a campus unit is not possible. Storyblocks has agreed to allow Faculty and Staff to use their accounts to download raw assets for use by Student staff as long as that work is for the University and not personal or course work.
